SHELBY COUNTY
PROSECUTORS OFFICE
2013 YEAR-END REPORT
During 2013 the Criminal and Juvenile Divisions of my office handled over 5,000 cases. Included in that caseload were 208 Major Felony (Murder, Class A, B & C) matters; 406 Class D Felony prosecutions; 994 Misdemeanor offenses; and 2,765 Infraction cases.
In addition to those cases, we also prosecuted 163 Juvenile matters, and handled an additional 277 other Miscellaneous Criminal cases, Search Warrants and Formal Investigations.
Our Child Support Division collected $4,385,591.00 in child support payments.
Shelby County crime numbers continue to trend down. Overall we saw nearly an 8% drop in the number of criminal cases (felonies and misdemeanors) filed in Shelby County Courts last year. Since the year 2011, there has been a 21% drop. Our jail population remains significantly below prior years. That is great news for our community. Those kinds of results can only be accomplished by the combined efforts of multiple public safety agencies working together. They include the Sheriff, Shelbyville, Morristown and other local police departments, as well as the Courts and Probation. Each of our departments has made a concerted effort in the past couple of years to work even more closely together. I believe the numbers show that those coordinated efforts are paying dividends.
I am pleased to report that, in addition to our overall numbers being down; we did not experience any significant violent crimes in our community last year. Murder continues to be a rare occurrence on our watch and we experienced none in 2013. Last year we did successfully conclude the lone murder case that occurred the year before. William A. Goode was sentenced to the maximum 65 year sentence for the murder of Genevieve Kelly.
Because of the great people who live here and the dedicated police officers who work here, Shelby County remains one of the safest places in Indiana to live. We are committed to keeping it that way.
